The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported on October 28 that annual CPI inflation rose to 4.3% in September from 4.0% in August. Trimmed-mean inflation reached 3.6%, up from a revised 3.5%. On the same day, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand held its Official Cash Rate at 2.75% in a 4–3 vote. The vote split and the inflation report are meaningful updates, but neither mechanically determines the next move in AUD or NZD. Currency markets price relative expectations, not a single statistic in isolation.
Australia: inspect the composition
The headline CPI rate gives a broad view of household price changes, while the trimmed mean reduces the influence of unusually large movements. Review the ABS tables, reference period and revisions before deciding whether inflation appears broad or concentrated. One release does not prove persistence. Nor should a stronger print be dismissed without understanding what drove it.
For AUD, ask whether the data shift expectations for the Reserve Bank of Australia relative to the other central bank in the pair. Higher inflation can support a currency if it raises the expected policy path. The response may be muted when the number was expected, when components look temporary or when weak demand offsets the inflation signal. State which pair and time horizon you mean; AUD/USD and AUD/NZD express different comparisons.
New Zealand: a close vote is not a promise
Three RBNZ members preferred a 25-basis-point increase, while four voted to hold. The official record also discusses above-target inflation, higher fuel prices, subdued wage growth and an uneven recovery. The division reveals disagreement over timing and the balance of risks. It does not guarantee a hike next time.
Track what could resolve that debate: inflation expectations, wages, demand and evidence that fuel or freight costs are passing into broader prices. If incoming information remains mixed, a neutral conclusion is more honest than forcing a directional trade. Our calendar checklist helps organise upcoming releases, and the forex drivers guide explains why pair-level context matters.

Canada and oil: ask what caused the move
Oil can affect Canada through export receipts, household costs and inflation. A price rise caused by disrupted supply has different implications from one driven by stronger demand. Before connecting an oil chart to CAD, name the benchmark, date and evidence for the cause. Consider whether the change influences Canadian policy expectations or is overshadowed by the US outlook.
The Bank of Canada scheduled its decision and Monetary Policy Report for October 28 at 9:45 a.m. Eastern Time. The Federal Reserve meeting concludes the same day. Before release, describe outcomes as pending. Afterward, read the official statements and compare them with prior wording. A preview is not the policy decision.
Sentiment and trading risk
AUD, NZD and CAD do not move as one bloc. A broad risk shift may influence them differently, and sentiment surveys or positioning reports cover limited groups and may be delayed. Record the data source and timestamp. Do not turn an impression from headlines or social media into a measured market fact.
Central-bank announcements can bring wider spreads, fast repricing and slippage. Define whether you will trade through the release, wait, or stand aside if liquidity is poor. Size exposure from the position and the distance to invalidation, then account for costs. Margin is collateral, not a loss limit. See our position-sizing guide and written-plan guide.
